How to install and use Kodi?

Looking for a great and open source media streaming solution? Kodi is the one available across a wide range of platforms. The heir to Xbox Media Center (XBMC), Kodi is a powerful means for arranging and playing your preferred video content. Though a great tool, it can still be a bit awful to get it set up and understand how to actually use it.

Kodi’s official software is perfectly legal. However, since the software is open source, some individuals can use it to evil works. For example, some people install modified versions of Kodi on third-party hardware, bundle it with unauthorized content via informal third-party add-ons, and sell them as “fully loaded” Kodi boxes.
Legal Kodi doesn’t support this stuff and doesn’t come fully loaded.

How to install Kodi?

For Windows and MacOS

On the Windows side of stuff, Kodi allows two options: a download from the Microsoft Store or a 32-bit installer available from the Kodi downloads page.

While for macOS, the only way is a 64-bit installer from the Kodi downloads page. Once the file downloads completely, just follow the install commands till the end. And the job is done.

For Linux users

For Linux,open the terminal window or SSH and follow the commands:

sudo apt-get install software-properties-common

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc/ppa

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install kodi

Update Kodi

Installing Kodi might be a hassle-free task for you but you have to keep updating your software regularly. And it is no different than installing it. Except for the Microsoft Store Versions, Kodi does not auto-update any of its apps, so you need to download and reinstall the newest version on your own.

For Windows and MacOS

You simply don’t need to uninstall the previous version of Kodi software. Just go back to the Kodi download page, download the latest version of the software. None of your existing files will be affected, all of the data will be living in the separate file.

If more concerned, have a backup addon with you in the software installed.

For Linux

For Linux installs, simply enter the following code in Terminal:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get upgrade

If the installation fails, you also may need to run the below command to install any missing packages:

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Adding Files to Your Kodi Library

Kodi

Once you install Kodi, it’s time to add some files. Kodi does not provide any content. Therefore, you need to add it on your own. Along the left-hand side of the application, you will see a broad spectrum of content categories including Movies, TV Shows, Music, and Pictures. These categories work with any local files, so all you need to do is add a source.

Click on the Videos section, and then hit the Add videos button. Each content section works this way. From the pop-up, you select files from any folder on your computer or an external drive. Once you add files, Kodi will list everything and make the respective sections with your files.

Installing Kodi Add-Ons

Kodi add-ons vary extensively in their service. Some more technical ones add support for various audio codecs. While, others affect more visual elements, such as screensavers or playback visualizations. The best way to discover useful add-ons is to spend some time browsing the catalogs. You never know what might come to your notice.

Installing is the simplest process, just simply select the add-ons section from the main content menu and enable the add-on browser extension. Categories of add-ons include: Look and Feel, Weather, and Context Menus, in addition to those made to complement all the main content categories.

Once you find one that interests you, go ahead and hit the install button.

Customize your Kodi installation

The simplest way to customize Kodi’s look and feel is by changing the theme. Simply navigate to Settings > Interface > Skins.

Kodi comes preinstalled with two default skins, Estuary (default) and Estouchy (touch-screen friendly). Snap the “Get More” button to the right to add additional skins, but have in mind that not all skins support all interfaces and features.

Users can also customize the way Kodi works.

For example, choosing the start page. If you use Kodi specifically to power an HTPC setup, it makes sense to set the Movies or TV Shows content sections as the default. You can also set up a screensaver for when you aren’t using your software. The default options are a bit dull, but more visually attractive ones are also available, such as the one that displays Bing’s photos of the week or scrolls multiple Instagram feeds.

GPS (Global Positioning System) uses the Global Navigation Satellite System network (GNSS) to get data about the time, location, and its vehicle speed. The Global Navigation Satellite System network includes various satellites which transmit information to GPS gizmos by using microwave signals.

GPS based vehicle tracking system easily track locations of multiple vehicles in a real time.

It consists of a GPS device installed in vehicle and a software which collects the data and information of vehicles locations on the screen. Apart from vehicle location GPS device can also send a real time data about vehicle’s condition and specific events which are set in the GPS device.

Commonly tracked events in public transport are ignition (on/off), doors (open/closed) & vehicle’s speed.

There are two ways for the GPS tracking system :
  1. Active tracking.
  2. Passive tracking.

Active tracking – It is also known as 2-Way GPS or a real-time positioning. It records vehicle positions and sends the recorded data to a centralized database using a modem. This useful for commercial purposes because it allows checking object location in the exact time.

Passive tracking – It records vehicle position in particular time points. Trilateration method allows calculating the location of  auto in time between recorded points. This type of tracking requires additional storage for recorded data, like a memory card or some internal memory.

A GPS-based Vehicle Tracking System (VTS) uses a Global System for Mobile(GSM) modem and a Global Positioning System (GPS) module for vehicle location. These system also allows performing some car controlling actions such as starting an engine and locking/unlocking doors which is very useful.

 Hardware required for building a GPS Vehicle Tracking System :

    • An LCD : (Liquid Crystal Display) is the technology used for displays in notebook and other smaller computers.
    • A GPS module : The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a network of about 30 satellites orbiting the Earth at an altitude of 20,000 km.Once it has information on how far away at least three satellites are, your GPS receiver can pinpoint your location using a process called Trilateration.
    • A GSM module : A GSM modem requires a SIM card to be operated and operates over a network range subscribed by the network operator. It can be connected to a computer through serial, USB or Bluetooth connection. GSM modem is usually preferable to a GSM mobile phone. GSM modems supports services like Telecommunication services, data services, supplementary services.
    •  A relay circuit : Relay is a switch which controls (open and close) circuits Electro Mechanically. The main operation of this device is to make or break contact with the help of a signal without any human involvement in order to switch it ON or OFF automatically . It is basically used to control a high powered circuit using a low power signal.
    • A Micro-controller unit (MCU) :Microcontroller unit has a CPU (Central Processing Unit)  in addition to RAM, ROM and I/O ports.
Best programming language:

Various languages are best suitable for programming the MCU. Some of them are Assembly language and C. Software in Assembly has fast performing time & C software is easy enough to build a tracking system. It is necessary to design a web page or create a tracking application for monitoring vehicle location by entering longitude and latitude received by the MCU (Micro-controller unit) from a GPS receiver and displayed on a LCD.

 

The web-based VTS consists of tracking devices placed on a car, a web application, and a central server system. Such system can be useful for shipping companies and organizations.
